Finally playing a Tav that ISN'T a Tiefling at Baldur's Gate 3 Nexus Mods and community
All the latter is from wikipedia. It's the last letter of various alphabet (hebrew, arabic..) Interestingly : in the Book of Ezekiel, Tav (Taw) is the marking for those that were safe from the destruction of Jerusalem. It would make a nice parallel with BG3's Tav and other being safe from the illithid transformation.

edit: it's very conditional if it's better than custom. If you plan on good/neutral playthrough, DU background may turn out detrimental and wasteful (you miss out on stuff if you stay good guy). If you plan to be evil, it's a huge improvement over "normal Tav" as DU background encourages you to act evil. Sometimes it is better.
